Dental implants in Reading: what actually happens from consultation to crown

A gap where a tooth used to be changes more than your smile. It affects how you chew on that side of your mouth, it can make you hesitate before a photo, and left long enough, it can even shift the way your other teeth sit. If you have started looking into dental implants in Reading, the chances are you have already ruled out a denture or a bridge, and what you actually want now is a clear picture of what implant treatment involves before you commit to anything.

That is what this guide sets out to do. We will walk through what an implant actually is, what our keyhole surgical approach means for you in the chair, how the whole journey unfolds from your first visit through to the day your new tooth is fitted, and what it is realistically going to cost. No vague reassurance, just the process as it runs at Reading Dental Spa on Wokingham Road in Earley.

In short

  • A dental implant replaces the root of a missing tooth, not only the visible crown
  • Our keyhole technique means many patients have their implant placed without stitches or a large cut in the gum
  • The full journey typically takes three to six months from placement to a functioning tooth
  • Assessment starts with a £199 scan that includes a CBCT 3D x-ray, so you know exactly what you are dealing with before committing
  • We use Osstem and Nobel Biocare implant systems and treat everything from a single missing tooth to a full arch restoration

What is a dental implant, actually?

Strip away the marketing language and a dental implant is a small titanium post that takes the place of a missing tooth root. Once it has fused with your jawbone, a connector piece called an abutment is attached to it, and your new crown, the visible white tooth everyone actually sees, sits on top of that. It is a three part system built to behave like a natural tooth, not a bridge that borrows support from its neighbours, and not a denture that sits on the gum and can move about.

The reason implants tend to outlast other options is fairly simple: they replace what was actually lost. A missing root means the jawbone around it starts to shrink over time, because there is nothing left stimulating it. An implant gives the bone something to hold onto again, which is why so many patients say their face looks more like it used to once treatment is finished.

What "keyhole" implant surgery actually means

Traditional implant placement often involves cutting and folding back a flap of gum to expose the bone underneath, then stitching it closed again once the implant is in. Keyhole, or flapless, surgery skips that step. Using detailed 3D scanning to map exactly where the implant needs to go, we can place it through a small opening in the gum rather than lifting a flap at all.

For many of our patients, this means no stitches, less swelling, and a noticeably shorter recovery. It will not suit every case; some patients need bone building first, or have a more complex situation that calls for the traditional approach. But where it is suitable, keyhole surgery is one of the more comfortable ways to have an implant placed.

Your implant journey at Reading Dental Spa

Every patient's case is different, but the structure of the journey stays consistent from start to finish.

Step one: your free consultation

Everything starts with a free thirty minute consultation with one of our clinicians (a £20 refundable deposit secures the appointment). We will look at your mouth, talk through what you are hoping for, and tell you honestly whether implants are a sensible route for you.

Step two: assessment and CBCT scanning, on the same day

If you are a suitable candidate, we can often carry out your full implant assessment there and then, including a CBCT scan. Think of a CBCT as a detailed 3D x-ray of your jaw; instead of a flat image, it shows the exact shape, density and depth of the bone, which is how we plan implant placement with real precision rather than guesswork. This assessment is £199 and includes the scan.

Step three: your written treatment plan

Within a short time you will receive a full written treatment plan, usually around ten pages, setting out exactly what is involved, the timeline, and the cost for your specific case. Nothing generic, and nothing left for you to assume.

Step four: surgery and healing

Once you are happy to proceed and the paperwork is signed, we book your surgery. After placement, the implant needs time to fuse properly with the bone, which typically takes three to six months depending on the individual.

Step five: fitting your crown

Once healing is complete, we fit the abutment and your permanent crown, and you leave with a tooth that looks, feels and functions like your own.

Single implant, full arch, or somewhere in between

Not every patient needs the same solution. A single missing tooth calls for a single implant and crown. Where several teeth are missing, or you are currently wearing a full denture that never quite feels secure, All-on-4 and All-on-6 implants anchor a complete, fixed arch of teeth using just four or six implants, giving you a result that behaves far more like natural teeth than any removable denture ever will. We will talk you through which route actually fits your situation at your consultation, rather than assuming one size fits all.

What it costs, and how to spread it

Your assessment, including the CBCT scan, is £199. Beyond that, cost depends entirely on your case: how many implants you need, whether you are having a single crown or a full arch, and whether any preparatory work is needed first. That is exactly why the written treatment plan matters so much; you will know the real figure before you agree to anything.

If cost is the thing holding you back rather than the treatment itself, we offer twelve months at 0% finance through Tabeo, so you can spread the payments without interest adding to your bill. Some patients also find their existing Denplan Essentials membership takes the pressure off routine care alongside their implant treatment.

Recovering somewhere that does not feel like a dental surgery

Implant treatment is a bigger commitment than a filling, and we designed Reading Dental Spa with that in mind. There are no clinical white walls or waiting room silence here; patients are offered a drink when they arrive, treatment rooms have a TV mounted on the ceiling, and noise cancelling headphones are available for anyone who finds the sound of a dental surgery the hardest part. After implant surgery, we call every patient personally to check how they are getting on, because a good result should not stop the moment you leave the chair.

Conversations about cost and timelines happen in a dedicated treatment coordination room, away from the clinical side of the practice, so you can ask every question you have without feeling rushed.

Why patients from Earley, Woodley and Caversham choose us

Reading Dental Spa sits on Wokingham Road in Earley, a short walk from Earley train station and close enough to Reading University and the surrounding business parks that plenty of our implant patients are professionals fitting treatment around a working week. Free on-site parking makes it straightforward whether you are driving in from Woodley, Caversham or further into Reading itself.

We are also one of the newest clinics on our stretch of road, which meant we could build the practice from scratch around a calmer, more modern patient experience rather than retrofitting an older building. For a lot of patients considering implants, that combination, a private, focused clinic with a genuinely comfortable environment, is exactly what tips the decision.

Common questions about dental implants in Reading

How much do dental implants cost in Reading?

Your assessment, including a CBCT scan, is £199, and your full treatment cost depends on how many implants you need and the complexity of your case. You will receive a detailed written plan with exact figures before you decide anything, and 0% finance over twelve months is available through Tabeo.

Does keyhole implant surgery hurt?

Keyhole, or flapless, surgery avoids cutting and stitching a flap of gum, which tends to mean less discomfort and swelling afterwards compared with traditional methods. Most patients manage the recovery with over the counter pain relief, though every case is individual and we will talk you through what to expect for yours.

How long does the whole process take?

From the day your implant is placed to the day your permanent crown is fitted usually takes three to six months, giving the implant time to fuse fully with your jawbone. Assessment and planning happen before that, often within the same week as your consultation.

What is a CBCT scan?

A CBCT scan is a 3D x-ray that shows the exact shape and density of your jawbone, rather than the flat image you get from a standard dental x-ray. It lets us plan implant placement with real precision, which is part of why we build it into every assessment.

Can I get a full arch of implants if I currently wear dentures?

Yes. All-on-4 and All-on-6 treatment replaces a full arch of teeth using just four or six implants, giving you a fixed result rather than a removable denture. We will assess your bone levels at your consultation to see which option suits you.
